The daily act of showing up, notes listening to The Rules of Civility

Listening to the Rules of Civility, Amor Towles.  New York City, 1930's pre depression. I am reading this because Maura and I are going to NYC this week.  I read that essentially this story is about NYC.  It starts out post depression, maybe post war, with the narrator and her now husband  in a photo exhibit of Walker Evans photos.  They come to a photo of a man, looking like he had seen better day's, like his business had crashed, his suit old and frayed.  They note the photo - then move on.  But see another of the same man in better days.  The story goes back to to the past.

Also, I loved his novel - A Gentleman in Moscow. 

Cool fall day on Big Pine Lake - fall equinox, last night at 8:54 pm? Something like that.  Cloudy, some blue sky.  Windy. gray lake.

Brain Pickings or On Being this morning both talked about creativity and managing in difficult times.  I have been looking for what I read this morning, but can't find it on the internet. 

10/2/2018 By the way NYC was grand!  Fun, a challenge, stimulating, another time of good friends.  Maura and I saw "Heavenly Bodies" at the Met - and Met Cloisters.

We went to MOMA saw a Mark Rothko, Jan Michel Basquiat, several Van Gough and and other works.

Saw the Broadway play, Come From Away, 2017 Tony Award winner for best musical.  Saw the opera Samson and Delilah at the Metropolitan Opera.

A few moments ago I was watching Masterpiece The Miniaturist - Johannes said "the secret of life is not to care too much, always be prepared to loose". 

(Of course, the background to our lives right now is the Kavanaugh  debacle.   The Republicans lack of moral compass.)

Rules of Civility - Pre WW2 - New York City - young (working - typing and shorthand pool)women on the look out for wealthy young men.  Older woman (Tinkers God Mother) suggested better to become what the man is instead of becoming a wife.

The FBI report is a shame.  Kavanaugh - it is a set up so that the Republicans can vote in their guy. 10/4/2018.  Our institutions are being  dragged down.  It will be a political decision.  It seems like the enthusiasm gap for the mid terms now shows that Republicans have stepped up.  If Kavanaugh is confirmed - maybe they will think they got what they wanted and will not show up.  This must end.

This is - what we have seen - is the very reason sexual assault is not reported.
