A little on balance...

"How do you calculate upon the unforeseen? It seems to be an art of recognizing the role of the unforeseen, of keeping your balance amid surprises, of collaborating with chance, of recognizing that there are some essential mysteries in the world and thereby a limit to calculation, to plan, to control. To calculate on the unforeseen is perhaps exactly the paradoxical operation that life most requires of us."

Rebecca Solnit as shared by Maria Popova via BrainPickings

Keeping your balance amid surprises......or keeping your balance with the same old stuff that is not a surprise, but is the usual or what you expect based on years of hurt and experience.   Some things never change, we lament amongst ourselves, those of use who have lived in this proximity to more of the same identified as a familiar pain.

Why do we still show up for this "sameness", expecting something different. There is a cultural meme for this habit and experience.  We have all heard it and practice it.  That's right.  Practice as a practice, like yoga or meditation.   One of those practices that that promise to not move us forward or give us joy or fulfillment.

At various times, we each are more adept at maneuvering, with the lack of surprise or the usualness of it all, while marvelling the fact that here it is again.  Maybe we stand there mute or even embrace because at least it is known.

Something to ponder,  losing yourself, being lost in being fully present. Being fully present is a conscious choice, we choose what we surrender to.  The way to keeping balance  amid surprises or  the sameness of something that is not a surprise.  Back to choice.
